Lytham Academy of Theatre Arts… or L.A.T.A. as we are affectionately known, was formed in 1994. Our aim was to give young people experience and training in all aspects of putting on a show…
When we started the group, we didn’t know just how popular it would be. We held an open evening and we were completely amazed at the number of young people who came to see what we were about. The enthusiasm we received from them was something quite amazing.
At the end of our first year we decided to put on a revue. A compilation of songs, drama and dance and the theme was “Rock and Roll” and was performed at the local performing arts college… This was a roaring success and encouraged even more young people to want to join us. We started with 45 students and a waiting list with just as many on it.
After the success of the Revue we tried our hand at putting on a full scale musical. After much deliberation, we found a show called ‘The Vackees’ which was about a group of Children from London who were evacuated to a little country village during the Second World War! For this show, to take us to a different level, we hired Lowther Pavilion in Lytham and from here we didn’t look back, and have gone from strength to strength in the following years.
We are affiliated to NODA (National Operatic and Dramatic Association)… Every year they hold a regional awards evening where awards are given to the Best Musicals, Plays and Performers that have performed in the previous year. We won several of these awards for “The Vackees” and we are exceptionally lucky, that all of our productions since have won awards for both individual and group performances. We have been most fortunate to have been awarded “Best Overall Youth Production” for our productions of “Barnum”, “West Side Story”, “Seussical” and “Les Misersables”.
LATA is open to young people aged between 10 and 18 years of age who all have one thing in common, their love and enthusiasm for the world of Musical Theatre, whether as a hobby, or a planned future in the business… So, if you are of the right age and have always wanted to perform on stage then we are the group for you.
